Great Britain hero Dan Bewley would love to win an FIM Speedway of Nations gold medal in Robert Lambert’s “back yard” after topping the podium twice on his home track in Manchester.
The Lions launch their world title defence at Torun’s Marian Rose Motoarena tonight, taking on Sweden, Germany, Latvia, Italy, Slovenia and Norway in Semi-Final 1, with the top three riders advancing to Saturday’s Final, where they join hosts Poland and the top three from Wednesday’s Semi-Final 2.
Bewley is the master of Manchester’s National Speedway Stadium and joined forces with Lambert to win SON gold there in 2021 and 2024.
This week, the tournament heads to the club Lambert has called home in Poland since 2021. After captaining Torun to their first PGE Ekstraliga title in 17 years last Sunday, Lambert is chasing another golden moment in the city of Nicolas Copernicus. Bewley – third in last season’s FIM Speedway GP of Poland – Torun – would love to help his teammate celebrate a home win too.
He said: “We’ve won the SON twice in my back yard, so we’re going to his back yard now. Hopefully we can replicate those wins.
“It’s going to be cool. Rob rides for Torun and we will see if he can help me out a little bit maybe. It’s always an honour to put your flag on your chest, so I am looking forward to it.”
Bewley is expecting fierce competition for the gold medal with 15 countries all tracking their top two or three riders.
With this year’s finalists all guaranteed a place in the 2026 FIM Speedway World Cup and this week’s SON winner advancing straight to the 2026 SWC Final, the stakes are high.
Bewley added: “It’s always so tough, especially with so many countries being strong when you take the team down to two riders. It’s always a cool event, and I also really look forward to Warsaw next year. I think that will be extra cool, but Torun will be a nice finish to the season.”
