Polish racer Kacper Woryna is proud to have written his name among the best riders in the world as he heads into Saturday’s FIM Speedway GP of Czech Republic – Prague at Marketa Stadium as World Championship leader.
On only his third Speedway GP appearance – and his first as a full-time SGP rider – Woryna topped the podium at the WWK Schwaiger & Partner FIM Speedway GP of Germany – Landshut on May 2.
It was an incredible moment for a rider who finished second at the FIM SGP Challenge in Holsted last season to secure his spot in the series as he followed in the footsteps of his legendary grandfather Antoni Woryna – winner of FIM Speedway World Championship bronze medals in 1966 and 1970.
Prior to Landshut, Woryna junior’s last appearance at this level came in the 2022 FIM Speedway GP of Poland – Torun, where he scored eight championship points as a wild card. He admits it has been a long road into the Speedway GP elite, and the 29-year-old is proud to have earned his spot as he lines up wearing the World Championship leader’s Golden Race Jacket on the weekend Prague’s Marketa Stadium celebrates 30 straight seasons of staging SGP action since 1997.
Woryna said: “For the last couple of years, I have been trying my best to at least get a chance to qualify. I was at the 2024 FIM SGP Challenge in Pardubice, where I bottled it basically (finishing eighth). But I got through the next year in Holsted.
“It took me a while to get here, but I remember 2022 and the performance I had as a wild card in Torun. I felt like I really belonged here then. I know not many people put my name on the list. But I knew I could put it there myself, and that’s what I did in Landshut.”
Woryna may be new to Speedway GP, but the Lublin and Lejonen rider is no stranger to mixing it in the world’s top leagues. He is determined to keep his cool in the white heat of SGP battle.
The Rybnik-born star said: “Of course, the prestige and level of the meeting is the highest possible. But for me, it’s just another heat and another race. That’s how I approach it – heat by heat. I keep it calm for every single race. I don’t have any expectations really. I am trying to be focused on winning. I just try to win every heat.”
Woryna is also keeping his feet on the ground, even as he prepares to be presented to the Prague crowd as Speedway GP World Championship leader for the first time on Saturday.
“This doesn’t mean anything for now,” he said. “We still have nine rounds to go. Anything can happen. This is just one of 10. I am cool with it, and we’ll see how it goes in Prague.”
Speedway GP regulars Fredrik Lindgren of Sweden and Dan Bewley of Great Britain both miss the event due to injury, with series substitute riders Anders Thomsen of Denmark and Czech Republic hero Jan Kvech taking their spots.
Kvech was initially due to serve as Prague wild card, but vacated this position following Bewley’s crash, handing a Speedway GP debut to local favourite Adam Bubba Bednar.
The 18-year-old finished fourth in the 2025 SGP2 series, the FIM Speedway Under-21 World Championship, and is rated among the sport’s brightest talents.
He captains his country into FIM Speedway of Nations – SON2 – Prague on Friday, bidding for FIM Team Speedway Under-21 World Championship success, and he can’t wait to test himself against the best riders in the world on Saturday night.
He said: “I am really happy. I am a little bit nervous for tomorrow, but we will see how it goes. I had hoped I would get the chance to start in Speedway GP, and now it has happened. This is my home track, and it will be great to race in front of these fans.”
Bednar is no stranger to racing in front of big crowds as he competes for Polish club Gorzow in the PGE Ekstraliga. But he admits:“This is a little bit different because in Poland, it’s a team match. This is an individual competition. We will see how it goes. I hope I can show what I can do. This is my first GP, and I hope it will not be my last.”
