Danish champion Anders Thomsen was left to rue a late change of bike and an expensive exclusion as he fell just short of the Events.com FIM Speedway GP of Poland – Gorzow final last Saturday.
Thomsen, who lines up in Wednesday’s Danish Championship Final in Brovst, sneaked into the last-chance qualifiers on six race points, having been left to rue a costly disqualification from heat 12 following a clash with Stal Gorzow teammate Andzejs Lebedevs.
The Vojens star admits that decision cost him a better choice of gate for LCQ2, but he still chased race winner Dan Bewley hard as he appeared to find a burst of speed when he needed it most as he left Gorzow with 11 championship points. “I jumped on my second bike for LCQ2,” he said. “I should definitely have done that earlier in the evening.
“I am also sure that if I’d had another gate pick and I didn’t have this exclusion in heat 12, which I didn’t think was right, then it maybe would have looked different. Nothing against Lebedevs at all – he’s my good friend and colleague. He picked up a few ruts and didn’t keep his line. He came on to my line and I couldn’t stay on the bike; I couldn’t do anything actually.”
Despite missing out on a final spot, the 2022 Gorzow winner was delighted with the support he received at Edward Jancarz Stadium. He said: “It was lovely to see the good support I had in Gorzow. I really appreciate it, and I really like to race in front of this crowd.”
Thomsen cannot wait to return to Malilla for round seven on July 5, having missed the last three FIM Swedish Speedway GPs there – two due to injury in 2022 and 2023 and then the 2024 edition after he missed out on qualification for the SGP series.
“It has been a few years since I have been there,” he said. “But it’s a really nice racing track. I am looking forward to it.”
In the meantime, Thomsen goes for a fourth Danish Championship on Wednesday night as he takes on Speedway GP rival Mikkel Michelsen, plus the likes of former SGP stars Michael Jepsen Jensen and Niels Kristian Iversen, as well as Frederik Jakobsen, Mads Hansen, Jonas Jeppesen and Andreas Lyager. SGP2 stars Mikkel Andersen and William Drejer compete, along with former SGP2 riders Benjamin Basso, Villads Nagel and Jonas Knudsen. Matias Nielsen, Tim Sorensen and Rune Thorst complete the line-up.
The stakes are high in Brovst as the 2025 Danish champion, or the highest-placed non-SGP regular, will receive the wild card for the Deluxe Homeart FIM Speedway GP of Denmark – Vojens on Saturday, September 13.
Three FIM Speedway world champions will be crowned on a huge weekend of racing as Vojens Speedway Center celebrates its 50th anniversary, with the final round of SGP2 – the FIM Speedway Under-21 World Championship – taking place on Friday, September 12. The FIM SGP4 World Championship for the sport’s 190cc stars aged 11-13 will be staged on Saturday, September 13.
