WOFFINDEN'S TEARS OF HAPPINESS

Great Britain racer Tai Woffinden cried “tears of happiness” as he completed an incredible track comeback in Ostrow’s 56-34 Metalkas 2. Ekstraliga victory at home to Poznan on Saturday.

Skipper Woffinden was a bonus point king for Ostrow as he racked up seven paid 11 points and produced a steely showing – just over a year after a crash in Krosno saw him airlifted to hospital, where he was left in an induced coma.

Woffinden may have been unable to take his place in Speedway GP for this year, but he will race on in Poland and was visibly emotional as he celebrated victory with his new club.

Posting on Facebook, the three-time Speedway GP world champion wrote: “Tears of happiness ... you will never understand what it took to be here today … But thank you to every single one of you who believed in me!!!”

The event featured a frightening incident, which saw former SGP2 rider Antoni Mencel’s 500cc bike take off like a frisbee after a high-speed impact. Fortunately, the Pole was able to complete the contest.
