Polish FIM Endurance World Championship side Wójcik Racing Team praised Bartosz Zmarzlik after the Polish racer made the perfect start to his historic bid for Speedway GP World Championship No.6 in the WWK FIM Speedway GP of Germany – Landshut on Saturday.
Prior to heading to Germany, Zmarzlik was at the Tor Poznań racing circuit where he was a guest of Wójcik Racing Team for the annual Speed Day event, swapping his 500cc bike with no brakes for an EWC machine and taking to the tarmac.
A Facebook post from Wójcik Racing Team read: “He started the May break by training with us on the track in Poznań during Speed Day and ended it by winning the German Grand Prix, the first round of the FIM Speedway Grand Prix World Championship. Big congratulations from the whole Wójcik Racing Team.”
After spending some time on a very different bike, five-time SGP world champion Zmarzlik returned to his speedway machine, kicking off his quest to become only the third rider in history to win a sixth gold medal.
He stormed to victory in the sprint race in Qualifying during the afternoon, topping Speedway GP World Championship table on four points before the main event had even got underway.
He then added another 20 by winning the evening’s SGP in Bavaria, beating second-placed Great Britain racer Dan Bewley, who was second, and Latvia’s Andzejs Lebedevs, who finished third to claim his first-ever SGP podium.
Now a 27-time SGP winner, Zmarzlik is aiming to be the first rider to win four Speedway GP World Championships in a row and an incredible six in seven seasons.
