ZMARZLIK WINS POLISH CHAMPIONSHIP OPENER IN TORUN

Six-time Speedway GP world champion Bartosz Zmarzlik took the lead in the Polish Championship race after winning the opening round at Torun’s Marian Rose Motoarena on Saturday.

Zmarzlik blazed through the heats with 13 points to secure a spot in the final. He then topped the podium with victory over former Speedway GP stars Piotr Pawlicki in second and Maciej Janowski in third. Surprise package Krzysztof Buczkowski finished fourth.

Pawlicki also qualified automatically for the final – pipping Janowski and Patryk Dudek on countback after they all tied on 12 after five rides.

This forced Janowski and Dudek to enter the last-chance race, and Buczkowski was the shock winner – finishing ahead of Janowski, Dudek and Dominik Kubera to reach the final, with Magic progressing in second too.

Buczkowski notched nine in the heats along with Speedway GP star Kubera, former SGP2 champion Wiktor Przyjemski and Tobiasz Musielak.

Przyjemski and Musielak missed the cut for the last-chance race on countback, while Speedway GP World Championship leader Kacper Woryna scored eight.

The second Polish Championship round takes place in Bydgoszcz on July 4, before Ostrow stages the decider on August 15.
